Book nine in the Slater and Norman Mystery Series
So what’s in a name? It turns out to be quite a lot, as newly installed private detectives Dave Slater and Norman Norman find when they take on the case of an elderly man found dead in his home.
Tinton Police can’t close the case quick enough, but Slater and Norman just know there’s more to the story than first appears. As they delve into the past to find out the truth behind the seemingly innocent death of Joe Dalgetty, they quickly find themselves plunged into a web of deceit, lies, and danger which has spanned decades.
As if that wasn’t enough, Slater is locked in an internal struggle between his love of police work and his friendship with Norman, and he’s also determined to get to the bottom of another mystery – what happened to turn high-flying barrister Jenny Radford into a down and out living on the streets of Tinton? His secretive lodger still won’t spill the beans, but Slater knows it’s up to him to protect her from whoever is out to get her.
The question is, how will he manage any of this without the clout of Tinton Police behind him? And will Slater’s and Norman’s new venture weather the storm?
A fun mystery
Not quite police procedural, and not quite cozy mystery, the Dave Slater Mystery Series is a series that has a sense of humour and doesn’t take itself too seriously. If that’s the sort of mystery you like, you need look no further.
What In A Name? Slater and Norman Mystery Series Book 9 edition by PF Ford Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
A twisted plot of false identities. Who was the old man Rosie knew? Did he die of a heart attack or was he murdered? Who would have wanted to murder him, and why? So many men using false identities, luckily Norm and Dave have the loan of Watson, a DS recovering from a bullet to her knee. Will they ever get their PI business off the ground? Will either or both of them find love? All of this plus the loss of yet another home to fire. Could it be the Russians again or someone else? The dialogue is a bit stilted, particularly at the beginning of the book, but it more than redeems itself in the end.Product details

What In A Name? Slater and Norman Mystery Series Book 9 edition by PF Ford Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Another gripping, humorous, mystery thriller from P. F. Ford. The author has the beautiful ability to tie all pieces together even though different events occur like an amoeba moving in all directions
I've just finished the latest book in the Dave Slater series and enjoyed it enormously, as I have all the previous books in the series. I don't usually get write reviews and make no pretense of aspiring to be another Edmund Wilson. I just wanted Mr. Ford to know how much I enjoy his writing. And look forward to more of Dave and Norm and Jane Jolly. It pleases me to know that writing was what he always wanted to do and finally being able to pursue it in midlife he has succeeded! Good on you Mr. Ford!
I love this series and these characters. I'm always ready to find out what's going on in their lives. The actual mystery that the two try to solve is complicated and is was a little too long for me..I found myself not caring who was who. I've liked the others better, but still a good read.
I love the storyline and characters. They're so real after reading all 9 books, I feel I know them. " What's In A Name" was very enjoyable. I couldn't put it down. I did guess the ending but still enjoyed reading it. I'm looking forward to reading the next book!
This book finds Dave and Norman starting a new partnership and before they are even open for business, they get their first case. The case is strange from the start and just gets stranger as it goes on.
As the story progresses, Dave has some interesting offers to make that could affect both Dave and Norman.
I challenge you to not like the Dave Slater books.
I started reading the first ones (in a box set) and couldn't stop. Now I have just finished "What's in a name" and I am getting worried. One more left and I don't know what I'll do then.
I cannot praise Mr Ford enough. Great writing, great stories, wonderful characters.
DO NOT MISS THIS AUTHOR. You'll be an addict too.
For the most part What's In A Name is a typical Dave Slater/Norman Norman lighthearted approach to crime solving in a story that inter-leaves several story lines and several mysteries to solve. While overall this reader the latest offering in the Dave Slater series the segues from story to story and mystery to mystery were often abrupt and interrupted the smooth flow of the overall novel.
The dialogue is a bit stilted, particularly at the beginning of the book, but it more than redeems itself in the end.
