This 6"x9" 748 page hard bound dictionary contains over 3500 main English verb entries and expressions with their corresponding up-to-date Moroccan Arabic verbs. Sub-entries under each main verb include adjectives, adverbs, derivatives of the main verb, and nouns associated with the main verb entry. For each verb there is a sentence to help clarify the context for accurate usage. Sentences were carefully chosen by the Moroccan editor to provide the learner with many practical Moroccan cultural insights. All of the Arabic words in the dictionary are written in fully vowelled Arabic script. The front part of the dictionary is alphabetized by the English verbs including their sub-entries and sentences and the back portion contains an index which is alphabetized by the main Arabic verbs with their corresponding English verbs. In this updated second edition we have also added topical vocabulary lists

Moroccan Arabic Verb Dictionary El Haloui Abdnnebi Steve Bowman 9780615530796 Books

I can (almost) never give a bad review for a precious resource. Whenever it comes to an author providing teaching resources for unusual subject matter, especially when a scarcity of resources exist, it is warmly received. This dictionary is nicely bound in hardcover. I imagined that it would be a dictionary primarily of verbs with their conjugations. However, it is nothing of the sort. For example, the dictionary lists a verb, then gives sentence after sentence of the verb used in many different ways and contexts in everyday language. In this way, you learn the many shades of meaning of every verb, but not conjugations beyond the examples given. The associated nouns and adjectives are also presented with the verbs (ie: to grease, grease, greasy, etc...). Periodically, there are pages with labeled pictures. All of the Arabic (with vowel marks) is translated into English, but there are no transliterations (you need to be able to read Arabic script!). Great resource for the serious student.

Moroccan Arabic Verb Dictionary El Haloui Abdnnebi Steve Bowman 9780615530796 Books Reviews

This is a great book! It has a ton of useful words, colloquial words, example sentences, and associated nouns, adjectives, etc. And it looks great with the Moroccan blue hardcover.
I fully agree with all previous reviews. For anyone interested in developing some level of fluency in Moroccan Arabic, this book is a "must buy". I always hesitate to purchase online, somewhat sight unseen, but this one surpassed my expectations by far. A big benefit is that the entries are written in Arabic versus some transliteration which is just more confusing. In addition, the entries are organized in a manner reflecting the Arabic language structure bringing it closer to Standard Arabic.
This book is awesome! It's the perfect complement to Aaron Sakulich's book "Moroccan Arabic, Shnoo the Hell is Going on H'naa?" I absolutely love that they included the diacritics/short vowel sounds. In the past, I've only encountered these in children's Arabic textbooks. I'm so glad to find an English-Moroccan Arabic resource that incorporates these symbols.
The Moroccan Arabic Verb dictionary is a welcomed addition to the few quality Moroccan Arabic language learning resources available. The Bowman/El Haloui dictionary provides the learner with a large number of verbs and their related nouns and adjectives and other forms. A full index in the back shows verbs and their multiple meanings.
Nearly every verb is backed up with a relevant sentence example in darija making everyday usage much easier to grasp. The book form comes highly recommended for the serious student and this reviewer looks forward to a searchable version.
This dictionary is absolutely indispensible if you want to study derija and broaden your vocabulary. By contrast to other available materials it has a modern appeal, is up-to-date and my husband, who is Moroccan, attested that it is absolutely accurate.
On more than 700 pages it not only contains countless verbs needed for communicating but also the most useful nouns grouped in word lists like "automobile", "kitchen items", "illnesses" and "symptoms" etc. I absolutely love this last category! It gives you the impression of standing on Jma al Fna and listening to the local healer promoting his remedies against widely spread diseases like dizziness, fatigue or hiccups (among others).
Each listed verb is given in a full sentence so that one can fully understand how it is used. These sentences are not constructed artificially but give you an interesting insight into Moroccan tradition and culture. By browsing through the dictionary you will get to know what happens when you marry Aisha Qandisha (check under to make crazy), how much a ram costs during Aid (check out to increase) or what is important during religious ceremonies (check to exorcize).
I can highly recommend this dictionary and want to thank the autors for their excellent work.
This is by far the best resource I've found for learning Moroccan Arabic and expanding your vocabulary. I only wish I would have had it sooner. I use this almost every day in looking up new words and the full sentences for each entry are invaluable. It is great to be able to see how each verb can be used in context. This dictionary reflects years and years of hard work and attention to detail. Thanks to the authors for making this available. I'm also so grateful that it uses arabic script with vowel markings instead of transliteration as do most other resources.
What I would love sometime in the future is to see this wealth of information available in digital form such as searchable on kindle or in an iOS app so it could be accessed on the go. If you are learning Moroccan Arabic, then you should get this dictionary. You won't regret it!
i like this arabic verb dictionary not only for the cool blue cover but the definitive definition and how to use the verb in masculine feminine singular and plural forms.... this will only perfect my arabic and accelerate it
